The Society of Petroleum Engineers challenge
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) serves almost 125,000 members throughout 134 countries. This congregation is made up of petroleum engineers, scientists, researchers, safety managers and other related professionals in the oil and gas industry.
Offering everything from magazines and peer-reviewed journals to online learning resources and math widgets, SPE needed a content management system (CMS) to support a number of unique integration needs. This included being able to integrate information with its member management system to deliver personalized content and experiences to its members.
SPE also saw the need for an intuitive CMS that could double as a digital newsroom. While the quality of the organization’s work is vital, so is the speed at which the content is delivered. Limitations with its legacy CMS were preventing publishing teams from working independently from the IT department, taking up valuable resources and time on both sides.
The Brightspot solution for Society of Petroleum Engineers
SPE migrated five magazine brands—Journal of Petroleum Technology, HSE Now, Data Science and Digital Engineering, The Way Ahead and Oil and Gas Facilities—to one unified, flexible CMS in less than four months.
Utilizing Brightspot’s extensible architecture, SPE leveraged an out-of-the-box theme that was customized to align with SPE’s brand guidelines. Individual brands within the multisite framework could then further customize without requiring significant rework to the parent styles within the CMS.
This solution also allowed SPE to utilize desired integrations unique to their business needs, such as:
- MathJax: an integration that allows users to easily input mathematical equations and notations into a rich-text editor
- Single sign-on: SPE utilizes this integration to protect member-only content and deliver personalized offerings
- AWS Comprehend and i2K Connect: an integration that makes technical tag suggestions for content classification
The outcome for Society of Petroleum Engineers
SPE now has the ability to manage all its content from a unified system, which is essential for organizations that need to successfully manage multiple brands. With its modern multisite CMS, SPE has enabled its content teams to work faster and independently of dev support through streamlined workflows and a plethora of publishing features. Brightspot’s integration-ready capabilities promote customization for SPE’s different professional audiences to ensure they are receiving the most relevant and up-to-date information.
